Although only very short fragments remain, the first motion pictures were made in 1888 by Louis Le Prince, in Leeds, in the north of England. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7saH58usq4 The first is generally agreed to be the one of traffic crossing Leeds bridge, the second was shot outside Le Prince's in-law's house, Oakwood Grange, in Roundhay, Leeds. Louis Le prince's story is worthy of a thriller, the skulduggery at the U.S. patent office, the industrial espionage by Edison's agents, and finally, Louis' disappearance and presumed death, after being seen boarding a train at Dijon, in France, he disappeared forever. This occurred in 1890, he and his invention died before Lumiere and Edison started.
