I've never had an employer who was loyal to me (I'm not young.) Loyalty is based on respect, but you need a strong union to get the employer to respect you.

I agree a strong union is the only way they will listen, but there is a caution. Unions have fellow employees elected to represent them. There will always be opportunities for unscrupulous people to do shady things. So you have to muster the discipline to keep track of what the union officers are up to... just like politicians. You can’t just vote and walk away till the next election thinking you’ve done your part... just like politicians.

Boeing Helicopter had a system of when there was a layoff, they made an offer to the highest seniority 100 or so to be a janitor. That way when one of the shops had openings they would draw from the janitors pool instead of off the street. Those replacements could hit the ground running knowing policy and procedures. Back in the late 80’s janitors were getting $20 and hour plus medical, pension, etc.
