Toaster vs. Freezer

 

You may have heard of the old parlor game in which a couple puts a hot ember from the fire next to an ice cube. If the ember survives longer than the ice cube, their love will flourish, but if the ice cube lasts longer, their love will cool. Usually, the water from the melting ice will extinguish the ember eventually, but maybe not before the cube has completely melted, so the result can vary, depending on how badly they want to see a certain result. 

Randall Munroe and Henry Reich, the guys from the What If? series are considering a more modern version of the story. What if you put a toaster in a freezer? Would it still toast bread? If your freezer has enough of a rubber gasket to accommodate an electric cord, you can try this yourself. These guys took this hypothetical question seriously and give us a serious answer, plus some extra fun to go along with the theme.
