Memory Problem

  1. How do you lock someone IN a house? Asking for a friend.

Some old locks require a key to operate, from either side of the door, so, if he locked the front door, and took the key, if there were not a spare key, she'd be unable to unlock the door and leave. Nowadays, we avoid risks like that, having thought of stuff like "well, what if there was a fire, and someone was locked inside?"

      (In truth, if there'd been a *fire*, she'd probably have broken windows to get out, whereas she wasn't willing to break a window 'way back when glass was a lot more expensive, just to get fed.)
