The farmers of the Landes region of France used to work on stilts because the ground was so marshy. They could really cover some ground in those things! The tradition lives on in a form of dance. (via Neatorama)
I don't mean to pop anyone's balloons here (le ballon) but my experience with stilts on dirt/grass/sand is that they, being wooden poles which end about 30mm square and my weight pushing them down, meant the ends sunk in and I was forced to deal with gravity.
According to the photos taken at the time, I wasn't even chubby, but a dashing, and lean, 23 year old.
Hate to think how deep the stilts would sink these days. What's the geographical opposite of where I is ? I'd be popping up two square, white pegs in ..... people say China but I think for me from here, it is Spain ... hang on, I'll have a look.
Oakly dokely, it would be somewhere off the coast of Portugal, so only the enemies of the Mafia would see the ends of my stilts pop up. The Portuguese Mafia, obviously ... mafias are very territorial.
