The first disposable lighter came out in 1961 Plenty of guys came home from Vietnam with engraved Zippos, probably half of those with anti-war slogans. Zippos are the perfect shape to engrave as a gift. They worked well but boy did they stink.
Zippos indeed had a unique and distinctive smell. I bet you also don't like the smell of gasoline because that's what it was. I liked it. Smelled like. . . Victory. 😁
