The Jelly Belly Story

A hundred years ago, there were two companies that together made America's supply of candy corn. The Goelitz Confectionery Company made them in Chicago, and the Herman Goelitz Candy Company made them in San Francisco. They weren't really competitors, because Herman Goelitz was the son of the owners of the Chicago company. But neither made much money, because candy corn was extremely labor intensive at the time, and people only thought about buying it in the fall. Over the next century, several changes in market conditions and historical events led this family to be the producers of premium jelly beans under the name Jelly Belly.

  1. From the invention of candy corn over 140 years ago to Jelly Bellies today--I never would have guessed that it was a family business behind it all.
