  1. The ABC News video on Heroes of 2022, what in hell is the hostess wearing?

Anyway, ever since I was a kid playing with my pet dinosaur I’ve heard “Never give up”, “Don’t quit”, “Follow your dreams”, “Keep going”, “Do what you think is right”. However, following that encouragement when what I think is right didn’t jibe with what my old man thought was right, would earn me the satisfaction of standing up for what I believed and often a slap upside the head.

Over the decades since then I’ve heard those nuggets of advice repeatedly and most people would nod and give guttural affirmation. What was rarer than hen’s teeth was the suggestion to stop and think, reevaluate your beliefs. How does all the things you’ve learned mesh with the ideas you’ve knee jerking to forever. Even if you still feel you’re right is it worth being Don Quixote miserable your whole life? Nobody ever advised me to weed out the things I believe but aren’t that important, you know, choose the hills I’m willing to die on.

There are plenty of people who will snicker on hearing the five encouragements I quoted, but sadly there’s a minority who accept them as gospel, along with a sixth... “Stick to your guns”.

  2. I dunno, Bruce, I've often heard (and passed on) the sayings "don't let the little things bother you ...and life is 99% little things," and "wisdom is learning to distinguish what's important from what's not."

I'm also learning to take joy in little things.
