Long walks on the beach? Putting the snow tires on the car? Possum season? The seasonal Christmas merchandise aisle at Alberson's? No white after Labor Day?
They're long for summer and the weather's still summery enough, so, sure, long summer nights of fall.
I associate late fall with being young, far from home, without resources and living on the ground and by my wits. It starts to get dark and what will I do this time? But something will come to me. A hint of cool breeze, sharp edges on everything. No experience yet of real problems of life, so a marionette-like invincibility... Like Frank Langella in /The Twelve Chairs/.
