Eat Your Greens

If that's the best reason you can think of to eat this stuff, it's pretty lame. How about serving them raw with ranch dressing and tomatoes? Even as a child, I felt no need to experience unpleasant sensations just for the sake of experiencing unpleasantness. This comic is from Nathan Pyle's Strange Planet.

  1. I loved salad when I was little. I loved everything about it, the onions, the tomato, the black olives and garlic and oil and vinegar. One day when I was five I came in for dinner from playing with other kids in the alley and in the dirt lot next to the restaurant, and I felt weird, kind of wobbly. The first thing for dinner was salad, and the first part of it I ate was a slightly /old/ slice of tomato, which immediately wanted to get back out and bring everything else down there out with it. I ran for the bathroom to throw up in the toilet but only made it as far as the furnace grate in the hallway. My grandmother had a few odd things to say about this. That was the only time I remember my grandmother ever sounding angry at me. "You little pig," she said, "Why couldn't you use the wastebasket?" (Since then a wastebasket or bucket or cup or whatever nearby that had a bottom to it has been my go-to solution to anything spilling or boiling over.)

Any, after the heater grate incident I would not accept any tomato, no matter how fresh, until I was a teenager and ate one experimentally. It was fine. But grocery store tomatoes are objectively horrible now, except some of the heirloom kinds that cost more than steak, so again I'm not eating tomatoes, but for money reasons not from disgust and feeling sick to think about them. There aren't many foods I don't like. Goat milk, maybe. Yuck. And anything with alcohol in it, though that's not technically food but rather a cleaning product. Anchovies. Carob.

There's a shit-ton of different kinds of food that Juanita doesn't like, and even what she likes has to be made in exactly the right way. I try.

  2. That's some story! I don't buy supermarket tomatoes, either. It's the only food I can think of where the canned version is better than fresh. Unless it comes from the backyard. My tomato plants have a lot of green fruit that makes me dream of next month.

  3. Nightshade allergy perhaps? How do you do with eggplant? Peppers? Tomatillos?

    Also: good story!
