The video about doornails mentioned the difference between old cut nails and modern wire nails, but didn't go into it much. Now Stumpy Nubs gives us the history of nails and the reason why cut nails are better for woodworking, such as cabinets and furniture. Wire nails are not only much cheaper to produce, they also don't work their way up from a floor due to the vibrations of people walking on them, so there's a purpose for each kind. Production costs matter more than optimum use to manufacturers, which is why wire nails are what you'll find in the hardware store. (via reddit)
