Calling a liquid a gas was the first mishap.
Sigh. No one stops at Exxon to get "a gas." Gasoline is a term coined in the UK and not used in North America (including Canada) until after the Civil War. As is the habit of humans everywhere, we tend to shorten common terms, hence "gas."
