Disney's holiday film for 2021 Encanto is the story of a family who has been blessed with a magical house and superpowers. The trailer shows how far computer animation has advanced, with eye-popping colors and flowing motion that rivals Disney's golden age of animated feature films. I also like the idea that Disney films are continuing their move away from defining a happy ending as a romantic coupling and more toward family bonds. Encanto is scheduled to open on November 24, the day before Thanksgiving.
Looks great! I agree -- Disney movies have improved dramatically ever since they embraced diversity of characters, views and stories and moved away from its formerly narrow focus only on "traditional" (i.e. white, eurocentric, christian) characters and values.
ReplyDeleteWould the story be that much different if a white christian eurocentric family had been given that magic house? Granted there were little flourishes specific to the ethnic setting but the basic story would be the same. I think Disney has loosened up a little, probably less worry about pissing somebody off.
ReplyDeleteOne my most favored movies was UP. I don't think there is a reason the characters couldn't have been any race/color/creed.
