That morning Edition article about why some Vermonters fly the Robert E. Lee battle flag? This is why I can't stand to listen to NPR. So they talked to one person who threw a bunch of contradictory nonsense, and to a bunch of college professors. Great. I am now so informed. Maybe the reason the two or three others who wouldn't talk are hardline racists that would never talk to a smarmy NPR content provider? Just a wild guess.
ReplyDeleteHere's the deal on all things "Confederate".
ReplyDeleteNearly everything was created long after the
end of the Civil War (not the War Between The
States) in an attempt to change the narrative.
For the most part it worked. One excuse is that
the North was simply exhausted and didn't want
to fight it anymore. Can you imagine what might
have happened if Germany was allowed to put up
statutes to Nazis in the 1960s because they
fought honorably?
Never should have happened. Existing statues
should be torn down and melted into slag.
Stone Mountain. Different. Stone Mountain is to
the Confederacy as Auschwitz is to Nazi Germany.
It should be preserved and used as a teaching
tool. You don't want to completely bury the past.
You can't - and if you try bad things will happen.
Too bad it's in the middle of an amusement park.
But maybe that's a good thing as children need to
be the target if we ever hope to make peace with
the past re the Civil War.
