4 U.S. Code § 8 (k): "The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning."
Both the national flag foundation and the US legion have published ceremonies for dignified burning of worn US flags.
I'm supposing that some feel the same about bibles, that tossing it in the trash is somehow disrespectful, undignified, or even sacrilegious. I once in the presence of muslim students in the dorm common room set down a bible (that someone had pulled out for reference) on the floor next to my chair, and they were really shocked because they would never place their holy book on the floor, it would be far too disrespectful.
