I think what is happening is that people are afraid there will be mass quarantines and they will not be able to move about, so they are stocking up on household necessities like bottled water, toilet paper, milk, bread, and other staples, just like you see when a hurricane or other natural disaster is imminent. Of course, there are probably enough people who believe Dumb'old Trump when he says the coronavirus is just like a really bad cold or the flu — which DOES sometimes cause diarrhea — so they are stocking up while they can.
ReplyDeleteAnd of course it doesn't take much to prompt a panic or panic buying. Look what happened when Johnny Carson made a joke about a supposed shortage of toilet paper during his monologue back in 1973. People heard of it and believed him, and within 48 hours it had become a self-fulfilling prophecy as toilet paper stocks in the SoCal area and elsewhere were cleaned out by people fearful of the coming "shortage".
