Why Some Asian Accents Swap Ls and Rs in English
It's become a stereotype that Asians mix up the R and L sound when speaking English. That's a minor problem compared to the weird sounds coming from English speakers who attempt, but don't quite get, Asian tonal languages. But when you break down the linguistics, the R sound is very complicated, and so is the L, and native speakers of different languages learn to pronounce it differently from each other, and differently within languages depending on where it falls within a word. Runaway
A simple train trip becomes more complicated by the minute. For a cartoon, Runaway is fairly frightening. Still well worth a watch, but I wouldn't show it to young children. And in case you are wondering, the cow is fine. Canadian animator Cordell Barker worked on this film for eight years. He said,
The metaphor of this film is that, whether you notice the jeopardy or not, everybody is trapped on this track, and we’re all going to the same place,” Barker explains. “I’m a bit of a Cassandra. I’m always feeling like I’m looking around and seeing this really apparent jeopardy. But a lot of people I know [have] that kind of disbelief that anything can shake their normal day-to-day life,” he says. “I keep thinking, ‘Man, we’re doomed.'(via Everlasting Blort)
An Honest Trailer for Every Tim Burton Movie
Director Tim Burton is behind a lot of big hit movies that reuse his favorite tropes over and over, no matter what the subject matter or genre. It's to the point where you could easily figure out that Burton directed a film even if you entered the theater with no advance knowledge after the opening credits, just by the way it feels. Screen Junkies has picked out the elements that make up that Burton feeling and lays them all out in this Honest Trailer. It's not just because Johnny Depp is in all of them, because he's not. Burton's latest is Dumbo, opening nationwide this weekend.

If you aren't a trained musician yourself, it's much easier to judge someone else's level of talent when they perform a song that's very familiar. Rob Landes demonstrates the different levels of musical complexity with the ultra-familiar Mario theme. Yes, we recognize and enjoy the theme when it's played as a simple melody by a n00b, but then he ups the difficulty level just like the video games do. The Phantom of the Horse Opera
When I was a little kid, I loved the cartoon Beany and Cecil. I hadn't seen an episode in decades, because you just didn't expect that to be possible in the 20th century. Then WTM wrote a post for Neatorama about the cartoon's origin in a puppet show called Time For Beany, which I didn't even know about. Checking in at YouTube, I am struck by Beany and Cecil's combination of utter goofiness and clever cultural references. There are worse ways to spend six minutes.

Pass the Salt
Joseph Herscher of Joseph's Machines manages to find the most ridiculously difficult way to automate a simple task, just like Ru8be Goldberg did. Only Goldberg's machines were merely committed to paper, while Joseph demonstrates his in fairly deadpan manner in the real world. Here, he automates the task of passing the salt down the table. What's especially strange is that most of the process doesn't involve salt much at all, but requires everything else in the kitchen. Eventually you realize that there are two salt containers, both within reach of the people sitting on either end of the table. But the destination is really of no matter, just enjoy the ride. The Acrobatic Fly
Watch a housefly perform a series of what appears to be circus stunts. British naturalist and filmmaker F. Percy Smith was a pioneer of the nature documentary. In 1910 he released this short film about the talents of the common housefly. Phobias
A phobia is an "irrational, abnormal, unwarranted, persistent, or disabling fear." There are many types of phobias you can explore here. Berlin filmmaker Ahmet Serif Yildirim uses block toys to illustrate quite a few different phobias, from fear of spiders (arachnophobia) to fear of public speaking (glossophobia).
