You loved Gary Larson's comic The Far Side; we all did, where we learned about Thagomizers, Anatidaephobia, and that tramp Jane Goodall. But do you actually know anything about Larson, the man? Probably not much, but his life outside of The Far Side has been pretty interesting. He plays the banjo, and almost had a career in jazz (go figure). He keeps exotic animals. And there's more, all in this video from Today I Found Out.
In one of Gary Larson's books he talks about getting the SF Chronicle deal. He gave them his only copy of his portfolio and they weren't calling him back, which made him think that he made the worse decision of his life and his brief cartooning career was over. He went in one more time and the receptionist sighed, since she probably had to deal with lots of these young cartoon who really didn't have a chance, and made one more call to the director who then shocked her by saying he was coming down to meet him.
One of Gary's cartoons was his absolute favorite and he asked Gary if he could keep it on his wall. He knew it went a bit too far to sell to the public though (it was of a spider scaring another spider with a mask, who then proceeds to let loose a lot of his thread in response).
