The Accidental Origin of the Hit Song “American Woman”

The Canadian band The Guess Who almost got drafted and sent to Vietnam because they were going south to play in Texas. They managed to escape, but missed their gig in Texas. That’s just the setup for the story of how “American Woman” was written. It’s not often a song is put together in front of an audience, and it’s even rarer that such a song goes on to be a hit.
