Another mental_floss article I'm kind of proud of was published way back in 2007. While it may have a "back in my day" feel, there's some historical tidbits you may either relate to or find interesting in the article Life Before Air Conditioning.
Part of our brief to the architect who designed our new house was that it should not need airconditioning. She did a great job. The house includes some of the features listed in your article. It's amazing what good design can achieve!
