We are used to seeing common green praying mantises in our yards, and we make jokes about the female biting the male’s head off after mating. But those mantises are just a few of the approximately 2400 species of mantises. These insects all have flexible necks and long forearms to catch flying insect prey, but their appearance varies widely, and some are extremely beautiful. For insects, that is.
