The Value of Learning

Neil deGrasse Tyson responds to the phrase you hear so much about math education: “I will never need to use this for the rest of my life.” And it’s true that we learn a lot of things in school that are just knowledge without application in the real world. But at the same time, I’ve run into situations where I drew upon some esoteric knowledge to figure out something completely different. The ability to learn and retain information has made me pretty resourceful overall. You never know what will come in handy later. How equipped are you to explore the world on your own? 1. I am now 75 years old. There have been many times when I undertook some project (whether in the carpentry shop or kitchen or...) when I stopped in the middle of something and thought, "I remember this from junior high school."
