Prisoner Re-entry
America puts way too many people in prison for way too long. But the punishment doesn’t end when prisoners are freed. Re-integrating with society is hard enough, but we put restrictions on where they can live, where they can work, and how they operate if they’re lucky enough to find a job. As John Oliver tells us on the HBO show Last Week Tonight, following the rules can lead to ridiculous situations, like the parolee who ended up selling drugs in order to pay his parole officer. Regulations make success so difficult that it’s no wonder so many end up back in prison.
We can’t keep treating people as if they have no value. First off, it’s wrong, and second, we are only making more problems for ourselves when we write off an entire segment of the population. Video contains NSFW language.
