Hush

If anyone ever calls Deep Purple a one-hit wonder, you can remind them of “Hush” from 1968. Or introduce them to the song, in case they don't remember it.

  1. From my freshman year in high school.  You may think that makes me old but it doesn't. I'm still only eighteen....   with fifty years of experience.

And I gotta say I love the sound of that Hammond B-3 being played through an eight-foot tall Leslie, for sure!!

  2. I once got roped into introducing a band at a local festival, and the gang from the radio station were admiring their vintage Hammond organ and Leslie speaker. I'll never forget the way they asked to be introduced. After my welcoming speech, it was "They're not mutant, they're not ninjas, and they CERTAINLY aren't teenagers, but they are ... the Turtles!"

Now I realize that was 20 years ago.

  3. Billy Joe Royal was the first to release this song, in 1967. Written by Joe South ("Rose Garden," "Games People Play," "Walk a Mile in My Shoes") Joe South wrote "Rose Garden for Royal, but Royal did not like the song so South wrote "Hush" for Royal while they were traveling together to Nashville. Billy Joe Royal recorded "Rose Garden" for an album in 1971, but never released it as a single.
