Inside the Wanamaker Organ

The world’s largest operating musical instrument is the pipe organ at Macy’s at 13th and Market streets in Philadelphia. It’s called the Wanamaker Organ, named such because it resided in Wanamaker’s department store for much of its like -the building that is now Macy’s. It was built for the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. The number of pipes has grown tremendously since the organ was installed in Philadelphia. The more than 28 thousand pipes range from an inch long to 32 feet in length. Read more about the organ’s specs at the Friends of the Wanamaker Organ site. (via Digg)
