ReplyDelete(That last "Anonymous" comment was from me.) There is one more letter in wide use that is not taught in kindergarten. It is the sixth vowel, the schwa. It is represented in the dictionary as an upside down e, which I don't know how to make with my keyboard. It is a neutral sound, a cross between, uh, ah and eh. In California it is the only vowel, often heard on TV. When I moved to California from Upstate NY years ago, I had to learn to substitute schwas for all my vowels. That was so people wouldn't say, "You're from Noo Yawk, aren'tchuh" every time I opened my mouth.
