As an agony aunt uncle type person, I would offer this advice;
Ditch the bloke, you don't need that low level of commitment.
Best idea would be to get a dog ... total loyalty and devotion, with minimal input from yourself .. although you will find yourself giving more and more, and happily.

Another option is to get a cat.
Be patient, treat him right, and he'll tell you.
