Year-end Lists 2023: Personal

In 2023, we sold my mother's farm, and I've been spending the proceeds fixing up my house. As you can see, it's now got a fresh coat of bright yellow paint. After two years of hearing "Are you sure that's the color you want it?" it turned out lovely and I get plenty of compliments on it. Every other house on my block is grey, white, or beige, now that the one red house has been demolished. So it's about time someone added some color to the neighborhood. For Christmas, it looks like a gingerbread house with all the colored lights and red ribbons wound around the porch columns. But the more important fixes can't be seen. The crew replaced a lot of rotting exterior boards, plugged in the gaps where the bats got in, replaced the broken storm door, replaced the chimney grate, insulated the solarium floor, and built a new deck (with a handrail!). I also got new gutters, had some trees trimmed, a sewer pipe replaced, one new toilet installed, and had the dryer repaired.

But in the middle of all that, the upstairs bathroom developed a leak and I didn't know it until it seeped through my bedroom ceiling. The water filled a #2 washtub several times. I got the leak fixed pretty fast, but then insurance got involved, and they determined I needed a new ceiling downstairs and a new floor upstairs. The good news is that I found out my downstairs ceilings are not made of asbestos, as I had assumed. I also lost the wallpaper and overhead light in the bedroom. When the wallpaper came down, I found it was hiding a lot of drywall damage. So two rooms got renovated that I didn't plan on.

While that work was going on, I moved my bed into my office, and reduced my work commute to about two feet. But it's all back to normal now, so I can dream of a new kitchen someday. I doubt it will be in 2024.

Gothgrrl achieved the title of doctor in February. Since then she's been practicing under supervision, still getting grades but no longer going to class. She will graduate from Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine in May. She also got engaged! They have tentatively set the date for December 2024, when he gets his PhD. Grad school is a good place to meet men. I will eventually have two Dr. Cellanias in the family, so I will have to come up with another pseudonym. I don't know what Dr. Cellania is going to do between graduation and the wedding, but she will have to start paying off her graduate school loans. I suggested she move back in with me, since there are plenty of veterinary clinics nearby that need help, which is not the case near the university. Then I found out how much money she is being offered even for temporary work, and saw that she doesn't really need my help to save rent money.

My grandson is now a toddler! He took his first steps without holding on to anything the day before Thanksgiving, and hasn't stopped yet. He's got places to go and things to do! He isn't speaking yet, but he's doing sign language, and understands two other languages. He has the world's most beautiful smile. The whole family is doing well. Son-in-law got his master's degree and a promotion in his job. Princess couldn't license my old car in Missouri without expensive upgrades, so she gave it to her future brother-in-law, which involved a lot of driving, plus insurance and paperwork from me, but at least it got us out of having to buy him a Christmas gift. And he will need that car if his fiancĂ©e lives elsewhere for work for six months or so next year.

In my extended family, my stepdaughter gave birth to a healthy and beautiful little boy on the day of the winter solstice. That is also my late husband's (his grandpa's) birthday. He makes eight total grandchildren for me now!

When the family got together for Christmas, I was reminded that we all stated our goals for 2023 and all achieved them. I didn't even remember mine, but Princess did. What are our goals for 2024? Doctor and fiancĂ© each want to graduate, get a job, and get married. I believe they will both do all that. Princess and husband want another baby. That's up to God, but it's certainly attainable. I don't have any particular goals for my personal life in 2024, which is odd but true. I've decided my goal is to make my church's food program sustainable. No, I don't know how, but without a goal, it won't ever happen.

I also want to thank everyone here for visiting my site in 2023, and I wish you all the most wonderful 2024 possible!

The Way America Does New Year's Eve

Laurence Brown enlightens us about the differences between new year celebrations in the UK and the US. My late mother-in-law was a big believer in first footing, although she never knew that term. My husband would call her very early on New Year's Day so she wouldn't have to worry about being called by a woman first in the new year. Then he'd go back to sleep. I am grateful to the British for giving us "Auld Lang Syne," though.

The personification of the year 2023 is trying to get his replacement up to speed. But how do you explain what 2023 is all about in just a couple of minutes? It can't be done. But 2023 is in a hurry to leave, so the new guy, 2024, is starting off clueless. Good luck!

100 Years of New Year’s Eve Style

Mode has another installment of their 100 years series, with a loo at holiday menswear. New Year’s Eve is the time for parties and breaking out a special fancy look, which has changed quite a bit over the last century. Dressing up for New Year’s Eve got gradually more casual over the century, but the custom is still to be a bit dressier than everyday wear. The 2015 version is wishful thinking on the part of clothing vendors. As with most of these videos, you really have to wonder what kind of drugs inspired the fashions of the 1970s. BOOM

What do you do when a volcano begins to erupt on your island? You flee! But what if you are a bird couple and you have four eggs to protect? These avians do their best, but the father is a birdbrain, and the mother turns out to be not all that smart, either. Their antics are funny, but in the short film BOOM, you also get caught up in the danger. Will the family survive the eruption? Will any of them? This student film from the French animation school École des Nouvelles Images won quite a few awards over the last couple of years.

The Best Of The Internet (2023)

I watched the whole thing. Pretty funny, nothing too offensive, and the injuries aren't all that bad.

There is no YouTube Rewind this year (yet). No Google's Year in Search video (instead, they did a video covering 25 years). A Surprise Granddaughter for Christmas

Donny and Miranda Goeb came home from Pearl Harbor (where he’s serving with the Air Force) to visit Donny’s family for Christmas. What Donny’s mom got was the biggest surprise ever -a new granddaughter for Christmas!

How was grandma surprised by this? The new baby, Lily, was adopted as a newborn. She knew the Goebs were trying to adopt, but that’s only been since October, and when it happened, it was out of the blue as far as she knew. (via Buzzfeed)

How Orbeez Can Destroy Your Life

In 2020, French TikToker Cyrilschr (who is no longer at that account) played with Orbeez, beads made of sodium polyacrylate, a superabsorbent polymer that soaks up water. The beads can expand to many times their size when exposed to water. So Cyrilschr bought enough Orbeez to fill his bathtub. It seemed like a good idea at the time, and made a fun video. But then what? How do you get rid of them? He thought it would be a simple matter of letting them go down the drain. But they aren't liquid, and they clogged the drains. The follow up TikTok videos told a horror story as he panicked over the growing problem of Orbeez in the sewer. It's both funny and horrifying.

The original videos are narrated in a combination of French and German, and this compilation has been edited down and English captions added. You'll have to toggle the CC button to turn them on. Boing Boing has the full compilation of videos, but the captions are not available in English.

Two Ways To Film The Same Scene

I saw the Tom Hanks-Meg Ryan movie You've Got Mail and hated it because he destroys her business and she loves him anyway. There was no such nonsensical relationship bomb in the 1940 movie The Shop Around the Corner, which otherwise is the same film, as they were both adapted from 1937 Hungarian play Parfumerie. Some scenes are fairly identical, but since they were filmed in different eras, the differences show up in the framing and editing. The reasons for this are more than just the style of the time; it also has to do with the influence of the stage production in the earlier film and the advanced technical capabilities available for the 1998 version. Nerdwriter1 explains the differences and how this affects the overall experience of the film. Now I want to watch The Shop Around the Corner, because I have a feeling that I'd like it very much.  (via Laughing Squid)

Climbing an Electrical Pylon

If you've ever watched a lineman up on a telephone pole (do we still call them that?) or an electrical tower of some sort, you first gasp at their bravery. But you may  have also wondered how they learned to do that. They say you learn from your mistakes, but in this kind of work, one mistake can be fatal. Tom Scott visited the National Grid Training Centre in Yorkshire, UK, to see how that training goes, and of course the first thing he does is climb an electrical pylon. Don't look down! Being an internet star must pay well, because he keeps doing scary things even though he does have a normal sense of self-preservation that is lacking in certain stunt YouTubers. And that's why we can feel his trepidation like a normal person. But this is just tower climbing. If there were real electricity involved, Tom would have had to undergo a lot more training.

Another thing about this video is our opportunity to look at how other countries get their power. Coal is being phased out in the UK, and natural gas has to be liquified and shipped in. The US has plenty of oil and natural gas, and plenty of room for wind and solar, while European countries have to import so much fuel of one kind or another. That's why electricity prices and heating bills are so much higher in western Europe.

A Kid’s First Star Wars Movie

How many questions can a 6-year-old ask? The answer is close to infinite. Andy Herald of How to Be a Dad watched the original Star Wars with his son, who had never seen it before. Anyone who’s ever watched a movie with a child that age can relate. Since then, they have watched The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. No prequels yet, but you really don’t need them, I think, to be ready for The Force Awakens.

I have to marvel at the difference ion seeing the movie now as opposed to 1977 in a theater. Like George Lucas, we didn’t know about Luke’s parentage until the second movie years later. And this generation has no idea what it was like to see that crawl, hear that music, and become aware of the Imperial Destroyer looming in the context of what movies were really like in 1977. During the golden age of sea exploration and the Great Depression and periods of famine or poverty, people suffered from vitamin deficiencies. But for us in the modern era, micronutrients have been identified, calculated, and added to many foods we eat. Bread has folic acid added. Milk has extra vitamin D. Even Kool-Aid has vitamin C, because ascorbic acid makes it tart.

A strange thing happened between the identification of vitamin deficiencies and the modern era: we got the idea that if a little bit is good, a lot must be better! It doesn’t work that way. Adam Conover once again ruins everything by debunking the idea that vitamin supplements will make us healthier.  (via Viral Viral Videos
