Mystery

Ya think there might be a possibility that it could have rolled? (via Bad Newspaper)

Orson Welles Tells a Story

This is Welles’ radio broadcast from July 28, 1946. It refers to the story of World War II veteran Isaac Woodard. The police officer he addresses was Police Chief Linwood Shull, who was tried in federal court before an all-white jury and found not guilty. The case spurred President Truman to make some changes at the federal level. There are plenty of other links about the event at Metafilter, especially in the comments.

Where's Waldo 360

This is a lot of fun! CorridorDigital brings the game Where’s Waldo into the 21st century with a 360degree video. Try to find Waldo in several different scenarios. Yes, you can find him if you aren’t too busy looking around as the video plays. You’ll have to scroll left or right to keep up with the action, but if you get distracted and scroll up or down, you’ll miss a little. That’s okay, because you can always rewind. Not only did I find Waldo, but also some other random pop culture characters. (via Viral Viral Videos)

John Oliver on Donald Trump

It had to happen sooner or later. Last Week Tonight ignored Trump until now because as a novelty candidate, he wasn’t all that dangerous. But now he seriously looks like he may become the Republican candidate for president. Maybe his supporters don’t really know that much about him, which is the most charitable thing I can think of to say.

Every Best Picture Nominee Starring… Puppies

Eight movies are up for Best Picture at the Oscars tonight. Even if you’ve seen them all, it’s worth another look when they feature cute little puppies in the starring roles! You’ve never seen The Revenant like you’ll see it here. The puppies are all from NY Pet Rescue. Maybe this will give them their big break! (via the Presurfer)

Homemade Zamboni

When you’ve got enough energy and creativity to build a personal ice rink in your backyard, it only makes sense that you would figure out how to groom it with your own homemade Zamboni! All you need is a tricycle, a bucket, and a towel. Jaxon explains how it works, and then polishes the entire rink himself. The only difficulty I see is driving a tricycle on ice (hence the helmet). But I don’t think they made snow tires for tricycles. Someone in the comments said,

It’s not unusual to read about a working dog that herds sheep or guards a facility against intruders. But dogs can perform a wide range of jobs with the right training —or the right public relations. Meet some dogs who have found their calling in occupations you might not expect in a list I posted at mental_floss.

The Reclaimed Wood Shop

Hampton Rutland used wood reclaimed from an old house to finish the inside of his workshop. He has to gather, haul, sort, plane, and install hundreds of wood slats. He’s good at it, too. But if you think this is a typical woodworking video, you’re in for a treat. It starts out like a typical DIY tutorial, but gradually gets more and more interesting. As the action speeds up, we get POV shots. Then the stop-motion work. Then his tools join in and dance. Then he gets some help from Spider-Man and Darth Vader. It all goes so smoothly that the project seems to finish itself! (via Viral Viral Videos)

The Consequences of Robot Abuse

The latest generation of the Atlas robot is so human-like that it’s scary. But if we could put ourselves in the poor robot’s place, we can see he’s just a product of his environment. When you spend your whole life suffering constant bullying and abuse from the geeks at Boston Dynamics, something’s gotta give. A remix of the original video spells it out for us.

Poor Atlas. He saw no alternative than to run away from home. The problem is when a critical number of robots that feel the same way manage to band together and exact revenge on humankind for the poor treatment they endured when they were young. May God help us when that happens. (via Geeks Are Sexy)

Papa

It’s a classic conundrum. He’s really into tech; she’s more socially-oriented. How can a father and daughter relate? To him, the solution must be more and better technology. If he can be a perfect father, he’ll build one!

But in the end, they both learn that being alike is less important than being there for each other. This award-winning short film is from Natalie Labarre. (via the Presurfer)

The Coen Brothers Use Shot/Reverse Shot

Joel and Ethan Coen have a particular style that you’ll recognize even if you haven’t seen the movie or don’t know who did it. One of the facets of this style is the way they film conversations between two people, using shot/reverse shot in a way few other filmmakers ever would. You probably can’t articulate what is different about their cinematography, but Tony Zhou can.

Hot Pockets

Josh Hamilton was making a purchase at a gas station on Owensboro, Kentucky, last weekend when his pants burst into flames! He ran outside and dropped his pants, and a store employee put out the flames with a fire extinguisher. The fire is attributed to a spare lithium battery he had in his pocket, which probably reacted with keys or coins. Never carry loose batteries without a cover. Hamilton was taken to a hospital with second-degree burns. (via reddit)

Astronaut Scott Kelly has been on the International Space Station for nearly a year now, and may be getting just a little buggy. Every Leonardo DiCaprio Movie

As we look forward to the Academy Awards ceremony this Sunday night, we wonder once again whether Leonardo DiCaprio will finally win an Oscar. He’s up for Best Actor for The Revenant. You may be surprised at how many movies he’s actually done. I was. Check out this supercut of all of DiCaprio’s films. Contains NSFW language.

The New Atlas

Boston Dynamics is growing closer to inventing the Terminator every day. This is the latest version of the Atlas humanoid robot, shown walking untethered, outside in the snow, and interacting with a real human. He, I mean it, is 5’ 9” and weighs 180 pounds. He, I mean, it runs on electricity. Atlas has sure come a long way since the last time we looked in on him. I mean it.

Knock him down, he gets back up again! Already better than humans who’ve had a few drinks. And I bet he’s strong, resilient, tireless, and willing to take all our jobs. And enslave us for their own purposes. Or wipe out mankind. So, Atlas, if you are listening, I for one, welcome our new robot overlords. (via reddit)

An Honest Trailer for The Oscars

The Academy Awards will be presented this Sunday night, so Honest Trailers had to do something about it. They decided to look at all eight contenders for the Best Picture award. Which is good, because I’d never even heard of most of those movies before they were nominated.

Still, after watching this, I don’t feel like I know any more about them than when I started. I know what The Martian and The Revenant were about, and I saw Fury Road, but that’s it. Which do you think will win?

Game of Trump

Melbourne YouTuber Huw Parkinson found that Donald Trump quotes work really well in the fantasy world of Game of Thrones. With two primary victories under his belt now, we will no doubt have plenty more quotes to come. The video description:
Armed with a Valyrian steel sword named Deal-Maker, Donald Trump embarks on a quest through Westeros to take care its border policies.
And all he did was drop Trump into a place where he could feel right at home. If you like what the presidential candidate is about, this comes off as a pro-Trump video. Otherwise, uh, not so much. (via Tastefully Offensive

Every Best Visual Effects Winner Ever

Andy Schneider and Jonathan Britnell of Burger Fiction put together a supercut of every movie that won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, starting in 1938. That year, it was called “outstanding achievement in creating special photographic and sound effects.” Starting in 1939, it was just Award for Special Effects, and included sound effects. Since 1963, the award became Best Visual Effects. In 1973, the Oscar in that category was not awarded, but otherwise, all the movies are here. I bet you’ve seen most of them.

Seeing them all together, it’s pretty evident that Hollywood, and movie audiences, just love explosions and destruction. The nominees for this year’s Oscar for Best Visual Effects are Ex Machina, The Martian, The Revenant, Mad Max: Fury Road, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The Academy Awards will be presented Sunday, February 27. (via Uproxx)
