Thanks, Bruce! Although I've cut back on the bakery hours, and will be leaving that job soon. Turns out that I just don't have the energy to do Neatorama, Considerable, and the bakery all at once. This blog is the easiest part of my day, since I don't answer to anyone (and don't make any money).

So the quarter sinks to the bottom of the cup, which means the power was out at least long enough for the ice in the cup to melt.  Then what?  Are you supposed to throw out every last thing in the refrigerator because — gasp — it didn't stay cold?

Personally, I'd mark the packages and use them as soon as possible; but I would inspect them before cooking — and once again after cooking but before consuming.  If things don't have mold colonies or strange fuzzy growths on them, or smell like the inside of a porta-potty on a hot day in Juarez, I don't think it's all that much of a risk to eat them.

If the ice in the closed freezer melted completely, that means it was off about a day. You'd have to use your judgement about the food in the refrigerator. Some would be fine: mustard, ketchup, maybe even butter. Raw vegetables would be okay. Milk and meat would have to go. I'd be pretty careful, personally, because the last case of salmonella I endured was due to a malfunctioning refrigerator.
