It disturbs me that so many of us are willing to cede everyday human decision-making to algorithms. Even worse, most of them are advertising algorithms in service of separating us from our money, and making it look like that's what we desired in the first place. This distinction between preferences and behavior, and how tech companies don't seem to know the difference between what people will reflexively do and what they would like to do, was a crucial turning point in a recent Ezra Klein show interview. The guy he talked to was kind of exasperating.
