They used to have a saying in California: "The way to get rich in a gold rush is to sell shovels to the gold miners." Most people don't realize it is based on the true story of Sam Brannan, who at one time was the richest man in the state.

Very true, newton! Those who got the richest were the ones who sold real estate around San Francisco. Also Levi Strauss. The shipping companies. And the gold rush is where the idea of the Chinese laundry was born.
