New Year's Eve

Have a great time ringing in the New year, but make sure you have a designated driver if you're drinking. Or maybe you could just stay where you are until morning! Party on! (via Neatorama's Facebook page)

Celebrating a New Year in the Movies

New Year's Eve on film can be funny, sad, nostalgic, hopeful, drunk, or just happy -but they all have Auld Lang Syne to tie them together. These clips are from the movies Ocean's 11, One Way Passage, The Gold Rush, Waterloo Bridge, An Affair to Remember, Wee Willy Winkie, Scandal, The Apartment, Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, Bachelor Mother, and It's a Wonderful Life. Someone needs to append When Harry Met Sally into this. Happy New Year!

Year-end Lists 2013: Miscellaneous

Year-end Lists 2013: Best of Blogs and Websites

The list of things to do with the internet for 2013 had a lot of interesting stuff, but I have an entirely different post for websites that put up lists of their own top internal posts of the year. I may be adding to this over time, as more of them calculate what they've done in 2013.

Some say the era of the blog is over. Well, maybe not. At least I hope not!

10 Ways A Condom Can't Protect You

A better title for this video would be "Ten things a condom can't protect you from," which include the kind of dangers found in a sci-fi or fantasy novel: they cannot protect you from velociraptors, magic spells, comic book heroes, or farting in an elevator. This public service video from the UK's Centre for HIV and Sexual Health is intended to appeal to geeks by hitting them where they live. Of course, it also tells you what condoms are good for. We Didn't Start The Fire: 2013 Celebrity Edition

Here it is, sung by Kevin Leblanc in a rapid-fire video looking back at the past year. Now, if you are like me and keep up with fewer celebrities each year, you'll still recognize some of them, and this goes so fast that "some of them" is enough to keep you following this dizzying video.

Long Story Short - I Had to Write an Essay

Anyone who's been to college can relate to what this poor guy goes through. You have to write an essay on some subject that would normally hold none of your interest at all, and time is a-wastin'. Or, to be more accurate, you are wasting time. I've often said that if it weren't for the last minute, I'd never get anything done. At the same time, I'm trying to keep my kids from falling into the same habits because you never know what that last minute will be like! This video is part of a series called Long Story Short. Leonardo DiCaprio stars in an epic film in which he gets into a lot of trouble in his youth, grows up, takes a boat ride, becomes stranded in a strange foreign land, flies a plane out, and eventually becomes fabulously wealthy, although he's still committing crimes. The story is strung together from clips from… (counting) 18 movies! They are listed at the YouTube page (DiCaprio has actually been in 29 feature films). I did not search for any of those things! At least, I don't think so, as most of them aren't labeled. The "trends globe" is kind of interesting. You can check 150 cities of the world to see what their residents searched for the most by date. Don't spin the globe too fast, or we'll all get dizzy! One of the ways mental_floss celebrates the end of the work week is for me to round up the oddest news stories for The Weird Week in Review. Not every weird news story made it into the weekly column, because I tend to skip those that are overly prurient or tragic, and stories that are not available in English. But of those 300 or so strange news items that appeared in the Friday column, here are the twenty stories of 2013 that are worth another look, in my annual year-end column at mental_floss.

Kung Fury

Kung Fury is a trailer that would like to be a real movie someday. Kung Fury the character is a cop who's a martial arts master. He travels through time to defeat Hitler, with the help of Vikings -and dinosaurs! It's a sendup of '80s cop movies, with any movie trope that was ever vaguely successful thrown in. I'd watch it. You know you would, too. Written and directed by Swedish filmmaker David Sandberg (Laser Unicorns), who also stars as Kung Fury. In less than 48 hours, this Kickstarter project was fully funded. Star Wars Downunder

Star Wars Downunder is a 30-minute Star Wars adventure, made by guys on their home computers.

The film tells the story of a lone Jedi: Merve Bushwacker (David Nicoll), returning home after a long absence. His mission? To partake in a refreshing beverage, known locally as amber fluid. On his arrival, he is dismayed to discover the planet has become as dry as a dead dingo′s donger, thanks to the tyrannical rule of Darth Drongo. Drongo has hoarded all the amber fluid in his impenetrable fortress “Dunny’s Deep” for reasons unknown. Can Merve, and a motley collection of unlikely allies band together to topple Drongo’s evil regime? Will liberty and amber fluid flow freely once more?

The production values are amazing, but you will probably have to keep the captions on, because this is all in Australian English, which is quite different from any other kind of English. (via Metafilter)

This Video Will Hurt

You've heard of the placebo effect, of course, but the converse has been observed as well. CGP Grey explains the "nocebo effect." When pharmaceuticals started being advertised on TV, under regulations that the side effects had to be advertised as well, I predicted that those side effects would become more common because of the nocebo effect. I don't know if there are any studies on exactly that, but I know some people who seem to develop every possible side effect when trying a new medicine. There are links to quite a few studies and stories on the nocebo effect at Metafilter.
