Nosferatu

The 1922 German horror film was originally titled Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens. Max Schreck stars as the vampire Count Orlok. Unofficially based on Bram Stoker's novel Dracula, this was the first widely-seen vampire film.

32 Superstition Origins

The strange thing about superstitions is that people through the ages wondered about their origins. If they didn't know the story, they made one up …so actual origins are difficult to pinpoint. But you'll learn something about your favorite superstitions in this mental_floss video, and you'll probably learn about some new superstitions you've never heard of before. Just more ways to give yourself bad luck! (via mental_floss)

9 Wild and Wonderful Jack-o-Lanterns

Have you carved your Halloween Jack-o-lantern yet? If not, we've got some fine ideas you can try out, in a list I posted at mental_floss. If you have already carved a pumpkin, the stores near you almost certainly have more, so if you like one of these Jack-o-lanterns, you could get another carved before trick-or-treaters show up at your house this evening.

Simpsons Couch Gag Spoofs The Hobbit

The Simpsons continues its series of elaborate opening couch gags that spoof pop culture phenomena. This time, it's The Hobbit. Yeah, the video says this is part one of six, but don't believe it -that's a Peter Jackson thing. The family's quest is scheduled to open the episode "4 Regrettings and A Funeral," which will air November 3rd. The highly-publicized episode will reveal which Springfield resident dies, and the funeral causes the Simpsons and other regular characters to re-evaluate their lives.  (via Tastefully Offensive)

The Blancheville Monster

The Blancheville Monster (1963) got about two stars. From the Rotten Tomatoes page: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/blancheville_monster/

Gerard Tichy plays a somewhat round-the-bend European count. His face is horribly disfigured, which in a film like this is a reflection of his warped personality. Tichy's daughter Joan Hills fears that dad will do her harm, in order to fulfill an ancient family ritual. She's right: Hills wakes up one day to find that Tichy has buried her alive.

Broadway Bomb 2013

The annual Broadway Bomb is an unsanctioned 8-mile race through Manhattan from West 116th Street down to the Financial District on skateboards. The New York Police Department was out in full force to stop the participants on October 12th, but as you can see from this video of one intersection, they weren't very successful. Racing skateboarders generally move faster than cops with a net. Still, out of somewhat over 100 skaters, at least 35 were issued summons, and several were handcuffed. The question is: which is more dangerous overall, 100 skaters in the streets of the city, or police officers movings nets around intersections? (via Viral Viral Videos)

Pumpkin Killing

Tennessee YouTube member hickok45 showed us how to carve a jack-o-lantern with a handgun (twice), and how to chop down a Christmas tree with a shotgun. This year, he presents the many different ways you can destroy a pumpkin after you're done with it. The chosen methods tend toward the violent, which is no surprise. Some men really do love their their power tools and weapons! But somehow I doubt if he expects you to emulate his skills with a light saber. His favorites are shown a second time in slow motion.

12 Wordplay Halloween Costumes

By this time of year, we've seen list after list of great Halloween costumes, not to mention the many cosplay galleries that appear all year long. Buried in those lists, there are some costumes that require you to think, because they aren't all that obvious. Some illustrate a concept instead of a character. Others bring to mind a common phrase or adage. And yet others signify a pun that will make you laugh -once you figure it out. Here are some of those wordplay costumes you might enjoy, in a list I posted at mental_floss.

Spell Block Tango

Oh, you haven't lived until you've seen this group of Disney villains in a Broadway-style production number! Cruella deVil, the Evil Queen from Snow White, Ursula, the Queen of Hearts, Scar, and Malificent sing about their nefarious deeds that weren't addressed in the animated movies. The song is a reworking of "Cell Block Tango (he had it coming)" from the Broadway musical Chicago. Watch closely and you'll see Adam Lambert appearing as captain Hook. Created by Todrick Hall (previously), who also played Scar. He also has a hilarious cameo at the end as Tinkerbell! (via Viral Viral Videos)
